Weekly Filet #180: You Will Be A Movie Star. And more.
1. Inside the worlds dreamed up by Hollywood’s most radical storytellers (California Sunday Magazine)
«It's bigger than color. It's bigger than sound. It's the audience literally inhabiting the narrative.» After reading this piece, I can't wait to be in a virtual reality movie. Forget about 3D, that was just a superficial novelty. Virtual reality goes to the core of cinematic storytelling. «You can't cut. You can't fade. You can't move the camera. You can't pull focus. What you can do is create an intriguing hybrid of Brechtian in-the-round theatrical stuff and game design.»
2. The working classes deserve respect (Financial Times)
Important commentary: While rights and opportunities for gays and women are becoming more equal, the working classes seem to be forgotten, making them easy targets for nationalist parties.
3. Rock and Real (Intelligent Life)
A wonderful profile of Guy Garvey, the wonderful lead singer of the wonderful band Elbow. The piece is a couple of months old, but like the band, it ages well.
4. To Siri, With Love (The New York Times)
A mother's «love letter to a machine». Nice story of an autistic boy who has found a friend in Siri (yes, that Siri in your iPhone).
5. Rothko.me
«This site is a little experiment...Like most of the internet it doesn't serve a real purpose. But it is nice to look at. Just like art.»
Recap
Two weeks ago, I recommended a Washington Post explainer piece on Ebola I considered the best on the issue at the time. In the meantime, the makers of Syria Deeply have launched Ebola Deeply, a news site dedicated entirely to covering the current outbreak. If you're looking for background or the latest developments, that's the place to go.
Secondly, I can't help but recommend the Serial Podcast once again. 5 episodes are out now and if you're not listening, you're missing out on something big.
Have a nice weekend!
