Weekly Filet #205: Europe or die trying. And more.
1. Europe or die (Vice News)
There are no words. What you'll see in this documentary series is sickening. But there's no turning away. A close-up-look at those risking their lives to reach Europe, and the forces tasked to keep them out. If you're also looking for an explainer on the current situation, I recommend this one by Vox.com.
2. none*
A brilliant, minimalistic smartphone game. No images, no music, no animation. Just riddles in plain text. (If you, like me, are not really into Star Wars, keep that in mind when you get stuck for the first time).
3. The last days of Peter Bergmann (Aeon Magazine)
Haunting: In 2009, a man calling himself Peter Bergmann arrived in an Irish town with a plan to disappear forever.
4. When You Lose Weight, Where Does it Go? (Mitch Kirby)
Ok, this surprised me. (I guess my breathing accelerated while reading this)
5. The Upshot Is One Year Old Today. Here Are the Stories You Clicked the Most. (The Upshot)
I consider this the most impressive journalistic portfolio right now.

Scott Fahlman invented the emoticon, you know, the :-). He practically innovated human communication with it. But the father of the emoticon is displeased of what his baby has become. In an interview last week, he spoke about "ugly" emojis & the 1982 version of social media.

She's the editor of a weekly newsletter I've come to like a lot in recent months: It's called «What Happened Last Week» and gives you a concise summary of the week. Subscribe to it, you won't regret it. You can also follow Sham on Twitter, which is never a bad idea.
