Weekly Filet #233: We're building a world-size robot. And more.
1. Click Here to Kill Everyone (New York Magazine)
«You can think of the sensors as the eyes and ears of the internet. You can think of the actuators as the hands and feet of the internet. And you can think of the stuff in the middle as the brain. We are building an internet that senses, thinks, and acts. This is the classic definition of a robot. We’re building a world-size robot, and we don’t even realize it.» An important text by security expert Bruce Schneier on how dangerous the internet is becoming, why the market won't help and why regulation is needed, but hard to do.
2. Back to the Future of Handwriting Recognition (Jack Schaedler)
A fascinating explainer on how a 1966(!) tablet could understand handwritten input with stunning precision. Come for the story, stay for the interactive examples that let you explore how handwriting recognition works.
3. S-Town Podcast (Serial, This American Life)
I was completely hooked on Serial's season 1. I fell out of love with it in season 2. Now S-Town, not exactly season 3, but a co-production by Serial and This American Life, sounds very promising again. Will drop as a binge-able bundle on March 28.
4. Surreal Drone Photos Transform America Into a Roller Coaster (Wired)
One of the less obvious things in recent times to transform America into a roller coaster. Reminds me of the very similar Warped Turkish Cityscapes.
5. Dear Economist, I Need A Date (Planet Money)
Actual dating advice from an economist. Lovely.
