Weekly Filet #264: Curiosity. And more.
1. 2000 Days on Mars With the Curiosity Rover (The Atlantic)
It never ceases to amaze me that we get to see such detailed images from a place that is millions and millions of kilometers away from earth. Sometimes, just for fun, I try to think of everything that needed to be invented and discovered so that I can see those images on a mini-computer in my hand. Inconceivable.
2. Teasing John Malkovich (CBS)
This coming Sunday is Superbowl time and all everyone outside the US will be talking about are the halftime ads. I don't think you need any of those – the best ad of this year's NFL season – by far – has aired already.
3. Black Mirror: Hang the DJ. Music from the Original TV Series (Alex Somers & Sigur Ros)
It's one of the few Black Mirror episodes that don't follow the theme of everything is freaking horrible. And its soundtrack by Alex Somers (and a bit of Sigur Ros) is like a wholehearted hug on a cold winter day.
4. Love. Pain. Regret. A Six-Part Series About Becoming a Mother. (The New York Times)
An animated video series based on readers' submissions. Powerful stories.
5. Does Depression Have an Evolutionary Purpose? (Nautilus)
At the beginning of this year, I've decided to collect all articles (or videos, or visualisations, or books) that changed my view on a subject, or gave me a fresh perspective on something I had a fairly limited understanding of. This is one of them.
I'll be on holiday for the coming two weeks, so this newsletter will take a little break, too. These are the three books I'll take with me: The Unwinding by George Packer, Post-Truth by James Ball, Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari.
